This beautifully carved animal mask originates from the Baule tribe. Baule art is sophisticated and stylistically diverse. The Baule hold objects in high esteem for the spiritual presence that is related to the object. According to the Baule mythology, the animal of the bush are heavenly spirit of agriculture. These masks are used on the occasion of the new harvest, at the visit of dignitaries, or at the funerals of notables.

Although such works have the potential to affect all members of a Senufo community, access to this doll oracle is restricted to the most enlightened senior male and, occasionally, female members, who keep it shrouded in secrecy.

This type of circular pendant representing a sun refers to an ancient and complex passage of the Dogon cosmogony, at a time when light was given to men through 10 suns. It is is relatively rare in western collections. The sun symbol identification that is sometimes made seems to be foreign rather than a Dogon interpretation.

This larger than life figure with the head of a monkey represent one of the humbler gods of the Baulte tribe. It is called Gbekre or Mbotumbo, a god with several tasks, for he is both judge of hell and helper of those in need, protector of the living against their enemies. Statues of standing monkeys were used in many different Baule cults, the most prominent of which was Mbra and they are very different in style of other Baule sculptures. If the ancestor-cult statues are often characterized by refined and detailed carving, the wood stained and often polished, the Gbekre are very different. They are roughly carved in unstained wood. They combine human and animal traits in such a way that it is nearly impossible to separate them. Besides, they are used for many different cults, for a trance divination cult among them. Women are forbidden to see some of them, others are openly shown.

This zoomorphic Dyodyomini Dogon mask made of Hardwood with a kaolin coating is an exceptional piece for your collection. "Elu" mask with an expressive Bird like face and hinged jaw originates from the Ogoni tribe in Nigeria, early 20th century. Wooden face mask with hinged, movable jaw. Lower jaw portion attached to upper by narrow wooden threads on each side. Semicircular disc like ears protrude from sides of face. Scarification marks with geometrically incised designs appear on both sides of the face at outer corner of eye area. The eyes are hollow almond shaped openings. The head decoration has a raised portion, with a vertical light-painted keloid or scar mark the center.

In this type of masks, human features are combined with the powerful bill of the hornbill bird, which is the most distinguishing feature of these masks. The bird is honored by the Jimini, the Ligbi, the Senufo and other peoples. They attach great importance to this bird, considering it one of mythical primeval animals, an attendant on the souls of the dead and a symbol of fertility. They are danced during the funerals of distinguished Muslim holy men, and their performances mark critical moments during the Muslim calendar year, and at the end of Ramadan, the month-long Islamic fast. The masqueraders are greatly admired for the grace of their dance movements, which they perform in pairs and in perfect unison. They are also valued for the positive qualities ascribed to the hornbill, whose behavior and family life are considered exemplary by the Ligbi.

This is a fabulous Old Makonde "Lipiko" Helmet Mask from Southern Tanzania and Northeast Mozambique. The Lipico helmet masks are worn on the top of the head and cover only part of the face. The helmet is worn tipped upward on the head so the dancer can see. The masks sometimes represent ancestral spirits, sometimes animals. The lipiko masks, which in the language of the Makonde people means “helmet mask.
