This is a fabulous Old Makonde "Lipiko" Helmet Mask from Southern Tanzania and Northeast Mozambique. The Lipico helmet masks are worn on the top of the head and cover only part of the face. The helmet is worn tipped upward on the head so the dancer can see. The masks sometimes represent ancestral spirits, sometimes animals. The lipiko masks, which in the language of the Makonde people means “helmet mask.

This Chokwe shield is carved from wood, with raised head and striated surface, very similar in form to Songye Shields and Luba Shields. They are interesting because, on the outside of the shield, the Chokwe depicted copies of their masks, symbolizing the connection with the spirits of their ancestors. In connection with their living conditions, the rounded shields are built for movement and hunting since the Northern people are hunters. The shield is completely carved out of wood.

This type of circular pendant representing a sun refers to an ancient and complex passage of the Dogon cosmogony, at a time when light was given to men through 10 suns. This beautiful piece is a Marka Janus double-face helmet originates from Mali. It is decorated with copper plate and brass. Mask of this type were used in the N'Tomo initiation mask for young boys during the circumcision ceremony of adolescents, and when circumcised men advanced from one grade to another. Along the Niger River the Marka use the masks in ceremonies related to fishing and farming. This authentic piece is called “Mbuya” and originates from the Pende people of DR Congo. The Mbuya or village mask is characterized by a somber, gloomy expression such as this one, and represent human types, such as the chief, the diviner, the epileptic with a twisted mouth, the madman or man in a trance, the widow, the lover, or the executioner. The mask is made of wood, pigments, and raffia.

"Elu" mask with an expressive Bird like face and hinged jaw originates from the Ogoni tribe in Nigeria, early 20th century. Wooden face mask with hinged, movable jaw. Lower jaw portion attached to upper by narrow wooden threads on each side. Semicircular disc like ears protrude from sides of face. Scarification marks with geometrically incised designs appear on both sides of the face at outer corner of eye area. The eyes are hollow almond shaped openings. The head decoration has a raised portion, with a vertical light-painted keloid or scar mark the center.

Vuvi mask originate from Gabon near the border with the DRC Democratic Republic of Congo. White face masks are a classic of the peoples of Gabon. This one comes from an area of mixed influences and styles located among the Vuvi and Mitsogho people. But the present mask is more related to the Vuvi than the Mitsogho because of certain features such as the elongated form of the face and details on facial features including the large arched eyebrows going from the root of the nose to the edges. It does not have a flat white surface but has eyes and eyebrows like those of Vuvi. It has a brown band enclosing the lower lip to chin and the cap treated in a manner close Vuvi. Rest of maroon and black patina, nice harmony.
