Carved from a single block of wood, flat plank figures like this are not uncommon in Dogon art. The flat portion may extend the full length of the figure, or may end above the hips.The plank figure tapers to a point at the bottom, presumably because they lean against a wall or flat on the ground, as in altars dedicated to the deceased family members and binu, ‘immortal’ ancestors revered by an entire clan. Figures in the form of planks have been found in the Tellem caves, which indicates that the motif may be quite old. However, some of the most full-volumed, naturalistic Dogon sculptures, stylistically opposed to the plank figures, also seem to be among the oldest, suggesting once again that style is not a useful factor in determining the age of a Dogon sculpture.

Vuvi mask originate from Gabon near the border with the DRC Democratic Republic of Congo. White face masks are a classic of the peoples of Gabon. This one comes from an area of mixed influences and styles located among the Vuvi and Mitsogho people. But the present mask is more related to the Vuvi than the Mitsogho because of certain features such as the elongated form of the face and details on facial features including the large arched eyebrows going from the root of the nose to the edges. It does not have a flat white surface but has eyes and eyebrows like those of Vuvi. It has a brown band enclosing the lower lip to chin and the cap treated in a manner close Vuvi. Rest of maroon and black patina, nice harmony.

This hand carved headrest reminiscent of a turtle originates from the Dogon people in Mali. The heavy honey-colored wood has a beautiful grain, the larger handle or extremity is richly patinated from having been carried around by its owner. The flat and slightly curved portion of the headrest also has a warm patina from usage. Dogon headrests are rare, replicating the larger stools in style and form, retaining all of the elegance and the aesthetics of larger pieces. Headrests like stools are considered to be objects of prestige, denoting social status and hierarchy in African societies.

A stunning Dogon door beautifully decorated with ancestral geometric figures. The lock consists of an abstract style head on top and rows of zig zags underneath representing the “flowing of water” in Dogon terminology, this continues to the door as a lighter carving and then further down in the form of a fish which the Dogon relate to the “Nommo”.The granary door lock (called ta koguru) is carved with a couple of nommo figures. These symbolize a strong magic and spiritual force. This force is then, according to beliefs’ animists of Dogon, imparted to the door lock. In the Dogon myth of the creation of the Earth, the amma god bore a being figure known as nommo (the nommo anagonno, symbolized by a fish). This nommo gave birth to four couples of nommo, considered as the eight ancestors of the mankind (unum) and the four elements.

The piece featured here is a deeply carved wood spear head in a bamboo shaft from the Dogon tribe in Mali. The spear head is carved of heavy dense wood and shows bars or barbs down one side. The head would remove from the shaft. The most notable weapons were made using a long wooden sheath and a metallic head as well as the bow and arrows and shields often made from animal hide. Spears were leaf shaped with along wooden shaft.The weapons consisted of spears and special javelins.Sometimes these were attached to a long string so that, after spearing an enemy, the spear could be pulled back again and used once more.

This figurative seating ceremonial spoon called 'Po' originate from the Dan people of the Ivory Coast and Liberia.With these spoons the women of the Dan cater for guests who come to the village to attend big ceremonial feasts. Artists in Dan communities mastered the art of carving impressive, large wooden spoons that are virtuoso works of sculpture. The spoons are known by many names, including wake mia or wunkirmian, which roughly translates as "spoon associated with feasts." The spoons range in size from a foot to two feet and have one or (rarely) two parallel bowls. The handle of the spoon is always decorated and often is related to the human form and often feature a pair of legs like this example.Among the Dan, the owner of the spoon is called wa ke de, "at feasts acting woman." It is a title of great distinction that is given to the most hospitable woman of the village. With the honor, however, comes responsibility - the wa ke de must prepare the large feast that accompanies masquerade ceremonies.
