This brightly painted zoomorphic figure in the form of a buffalo is a Segou Bozo puppet of Mali. The piece is a carving with a number of patterns fabric emphasized through the use of bright colors. The head surface has probably been repainted a number of times and reflects the age and long use of this figure by the Bozo.
The Bozo sing, dance, drum, manipulate puppets or dance masks in creating performances called Sogo Ba. They alternate with masked dancers, equally representing mythical animals and symbolic persons. These hidden dancers express the character represented by the puppet or mask, through their movements. There are visible dancers as well: the guide who accompanies a sogo or a mask, and dancing with it, often in unison, and the members of the youth association (ton), who perform circle dances and have jumping contests. Moreover, individuals from the public may dance with a puppet or mask to show his or her respect or admiration. Though considered to be a form of entertainment, the performances are directed towards a description of the universal moral and the imperfection of humans, and therefore the need to educate people as regards to ethical behavior and how to attain a religious way of life and maintain social and familial stability. Performances include religion, history, observations of local contemporary political events, satire of behavior and simple entertainment through the music and dance.
The Bambara numbering 2,500.000 million form the largest ethnic group within Mali. The triangle of the Bambara region, divided into two parts by the Niger River, constitutes the greater part of the western and southern Mali of today. The Bamana are members of the Mande culture, a large and powerful group of peoples in western Africa. Kaarta and Segou are Bamana city-states, which were established in the 17th century and continued to have political influence throughout the western Sudan states into the 19th century. At this time religious wars broke out throughout the region, setting Islamized societies against those who preferred to embrace traditional Bamana views.
