Vintage Salampasu Mask – Congo DRC
This mask comes from the Salampasu of the Dem. Rep. of Congo, it is one of three different types of masks used during initiation ceremonies for young men. The mask is made of wood, plated with metal, believed to be a powerful medium. The mask’s bared teeth and pronounced forehead suggests a feeling of ferocity and aggressiveness. The sunken eyes give off an intensity expected of hunters, warriors, and chiefs, roles which the young men being initiated are expected to become.
Made of 100% wood, fiber, and pigments.
Model is W 21 – H 39 and weight 1.1 kg.
