Mossi Bwa Plank Mask – Burkina Faso
A plank mask with a female ancestral figure. The Mossi people have a rich repertoire of masks. The present mask of the Karan-wemba type displays an oval, concave mask face with a vertical, jagged central ridge and small, rectangular eyes. Atop this plank crest is a large, female figure of the Mossi representing a female ancestor (tribe or clan mother). The female figure also displays relief decoration on the body, as well as typical tribal scarification marks on the face and around the navel.
The entire high mask is carved from a single piece of brown wood and dyed dark brown, white and red.
Made of 100% wood
Model is W 32 – H 104 and weight 2.3 kg.
