The Kanaga masks depict the face as an almost long and rectangular box with deeply hollowed channels for the eyes. According to Dogon beliefs, it represents a wild monkey, uncivilized, dangerous, and antisocial behavior –  the direct opposite of their beliefs about the way a proper, solid, upstanding Dogon person is expected to behave.

This reliquary figure is called Ekuk means both “protective forest spirit” and “children of beete.” It displays a flat surface and often has a whitened heart-shaped face, a triangular nose, coffee-bean eyes and small or non-existent mouth. The faces is painted in white kaolin earth, a pigment associated by the Kwele with light and clarity, the two essential factors in the fight against evil.

This powerful Grebo Mask with dense wood and black pigment belongs to the Kru group, a small population of the western coast of the Ivory Coast, and their neighbours from eastern Liberia). The Grebo ethnic group in Ivory Coast uses this mask to the needs of “fetish” (sacrifices). Worn vertically, Kru masks were fitted below a huge headdress which consisted of an arc-shaped structure made of vegetable fibres, covered with cloth and trimmed by a stiff fringe of palm-leafed fibres and long waving feathers, creating awe-inspiring effects.

"Elu" mask with an expressive Bird like face and hinged jaw originates from the Ogoni tribe in Nigeria, early 20th century. Wooden face mask with hinged, movable jaw. Lower jaw portion attached to upper by narrow wooden threads on each side. Semicircular disc like ears protrude from sides of face. Scarification marks with geometrically incised designs appear on both sides of the face at outer corner of eye area. The eyes are hollow almond shaped openings. The head decoration has a raised portion, with a vertical light-painted keloid or scar mark the center.

This tribal Mask From the Chokwe is called pwo or mwana pwo mask and  originates from Angola. It has an elaborate hairline made up of a braided fibre fabric, beautiful and unusual scarification patterns on the forehead and cheeks. Pwo signifies womanhood and an elder ancestral female associated with fertility. The cross form on the forehead, known as cingelyengelye, is an early Portuguese influence.

This ‘Gomintogo Mask’ originates from the Dogon people of Eastern Mali, and represent one of the 80 masks types of the tribe. The first mask was said to be originally carved by a farmer who killed the deer because it had devastated his fields. The farmer built an altar to shelter the spirit of the deer and prevent it to wanders and take revenge on the living people.
