This Dogon Nommo figure has been rendered in a simplified way, reducing it to its essential. It is elongated with emphasis on geometric forms. This is extremely versatile, although common stylistic characteristics – such as a tendency towards stylization – are apparent on the statues. The subjective impression is one of immobility with a mysterious sense of a solemn gravity and serene majesty, although conveying at the same time a latent movement. Their art deals with the myths whose complex ensemble regulates the life of the individual. This impressive male fetish figure originates from the Songye, in the southern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This particular piece features an horn one on top of the head, large open mouth with protruding tooth. On the back of the neck, there used to be a small compartment that was used to put to insert fetish material, called boanga. Typically the arms are along the body and hands are placed on each side of the abdomen. The fetish is firmly planted on his legs slightly bent forward and feet are carved on a thick cylindrical base that is eroded in some places. The patina is brown and light brown in places. Songye fetish figures vary in size from 4 to 60. The works of Songye craftsmen are often used within the secret societies during various ceremonies.

This authentic carved wood mask, depicting an abstracted animal originates from the Dogon tribe in Mali. The Kanaga masks depict the face as an almost long and rectangular box with deeply hollowed channels for the eyes. According to Dogon beliefs, it represents a wild monkey, uncivilized, dangerous, and antisocial behavior –  the direct opposite of their beliefs about the way a proper, solid, upstanding Dogon person is expected to behave.

It was designed to seal off a ceramic and stone granary, which contained agricultural produce which would have sustained a large social group between harvests. This seated Dogon couple sculpture gives eloquent expression to the shared and symmetrical responsibilities of men and women in Dogon society. The virtually identical forms of the male and female protagonists in this visual commentary accentuate the parity of their subtly distinctive roles. She is responsible for child care, he for providing sustenance. He has one hand protectively draped across her shoulders. This emphasizes their mutual roles in procreation and nurturing. Male and female are connected to one another by his gesture, but additionally are articulated as discrete units. This approach reflects Dogon attitudes toward marriage as a partnership of independent equals. This balanced duality is also a central tenet of Dogon mythology.
