Description
This fantastic abstract figure, with an exceptional aesethic presence and compelling abstract design, was thought to have either a protective or healing function for the Wurkun or Bikwin peoples of the Benue River Valley. The Chamba figure is covered with a substantially thick, encrusted and in part shiny, reddish-brown offering patina. This sculpture expresses a considerable age. Chamba figures of this scale are very rare.
The present sculpture out of hard wood shows the typical stylistic features of the Chamba: a high, narrow crested coiffure, implied, small eyes with traces of white accentuation, as in both of the ears at the sides. It has a small nose and a protruding, rectangular, open full teeth mouth. Very characteristic for the Chamba figures, who always stand with legs apart, are their shoulders which are hunched forward, and their freely carved, slightly bent arms with accentuated, large hands. Not much is known regarding the meaning of these relatively large figures of the Chamba. They probably represent important ancestors, who could be consulted in a variety of ceremonies and provided with offerings.
The Chamba, whose number today is estimated at 20,000, live south of the Benue River. They are socially divided into small centralized kingdoms, each headed by a king assisted by a council of elders whose powers are regulated by male and female secret societies. The Chamba kings are also assisted by royal women who serve as queens. Similar to their Mumuye and Jukun neighbours, the Chamba venerate anthropomorphic statues of male and female gender. They might stand in particular for ancestors, or for a collectivity of the dead (ranging from those of a specific kin grouping to the dead generally). In different contexts, the same anthropomorphic figure might evoke some or all of these types of being.
