Product Description

Dogon Kneeling Nommo, Mali
The wonderful Dogon kneeling figure with extensive evidence of age and weathered surface, is a condensation of the classical art of the north – realism and force – with a suppleness, an elegance, not found elsewhere, completely opposed to the Dogon sculpture on the southern cliff, which is very constructed, cubist, abstract.” The facial features, hairstyles, and shoulders are all prominent announcemnts of the Dogon carver’s talented hand. Such figures were placed in ancestor shrine to honor the ancestors and ask for blessing, ensure fertility and good will, and to chase away malevolent forces. These figures show the influence of the Mande speaking Bamana (the Dogon are Gur language speakers – different language, different cultures!) in sculptural attributes well defined.
Made of 100% Wood, paint, fabrics.
