This zoomorphic figure with protruding eyes is a classic example of the Mambila people of northern Nigeria.  The wide range of uses to which such a figure may have been employed was probably determined by the medicines in the possession of the owner, and how it was activated, rather than by specific stylistic characteristics of the sculpture itself.

A powerful and authentic kran mask made of hard wood, with brown patina and pigments. An unusually old mask of the Dan-Kran, depicting a monkey (chimpanzee or guenon). The mask displays characteristic forms: a short, bulging forehead, deep-set, triangular eyes, protruding, triangular cheeks and a large, open mouth. At the top of the head is a (typical) iron pin. The present Kagle maskâ is an especially old type, as suggested by the rectangular (rather than round) shape of the fastening eyelets for the mask costume along the edge of the mask, as well as by its tongue, which is made of red dyed terracotta. This abstract zoomorphic mask, with a traditional geometric shaped face, eyes, and ears, a prominent groin decorated with geometric motifs, crusted old wooden patina, represent, the hyena, one of the animals that inhabit the regions where the Dogon live and hunt. The mask originates from Mali, located in the administrative districts of Bandiagara and Douentza, Mopti region. One can find approximately 80 types of mask from the Bandiagara Escarpment in eastern Malimask. The Dogon people created these eighty mask types to represent characters in their cosmic myths.

This is a fabulous Old Makonde "Lipiko" Helmet Mask from Southern Tanzania and Northeast Mozambique. The Lipico helmet masks are worn on the top of the head and cover only part of the face. The helmet is worn tipped upward on the head so the dancer can see. The masks sometimes represent ancestral spirits, sometimes animals. The lipiko masks, which in the language of the Makonde people means “helmet mask.

This powerful Grebo Mask with dense wood and black pigment belongs to the Kru group, a small population of the western coast of the Ivory Coast, and their neighbours from eastern Liberia). The Grebo ethnic group in Ivory Coast uses this mask to the needs of “fetish” (sacrifices). Worn vertically, Kru masks were fitted below a huge headdress which consisted of an arc-shaped structure made of vegetable fibres, covered with cloth and trimmed by a stiff fringe of palm-leafed fibres and long waving feathers, creating awe-inspiring effects.

This anthromorphic ceremonial spoon originate from the Dan people of the Ivory Coast and Liberia.With these spoons the women of the Dan cater for guests who come to the village to attend big ceremonial feasts. Artists in Dan communities mastered the art of carving impressive, large wooden spoons that are virtuoso works of sculpture. The spoons are known by many names, including wake mia or wunkirmian, which roughly translates as "spoon associated with feasts." The spoons range in size from a foot to two feet and have one or (rarely) two parallel bowls. The handle of the spoon is always decorated and often is related to the human form and often feature a pair of legs like this example.Among the Dan, the owner of the spoon is called wa ke de, "at feasts acting woman." It is a title of great distinction that is given to the most hospitable woman of the village. With the honor, however, comes responsibility - the wa ke de must prepare the large feast that accompanies masquerade ceremonies.
