Description
This type of circular pendant representing a sun refers to an ancient and complex passage of the Dogon cosmogony, at a time when light was given to men through 10 suns. It is is relatively rare in western collections. A long time ago, an imprudent but skilful hunter, shot his arrows at the suns, killed 9, but the latter managed to escape. The Hogons assembled to pray the sun to return. Magnanimous, the latter accepted. To thank him, the men forged this sun jewel to honor him.
Generally they are attributed to the Dogon of Mali, although they seem to be part of a regional tradition that includes peoples in Burkina Faso and the Moba of Togo. The number of radiating spokes varies, obscuring standard Dogon numerological and cosmological symbolism. However, if the pendants are worn by both important men and aged women, this might explain the dual male and female associations. The sun symbol identification that is sometimes made seems to be foreign rather than a Dogon interpretation.
The Dogon an ethnic group are mainly located in the administrative districts of Bandiagara and Douentza in Mali, West Africa. The precise origins of the Dogon people, like those of many other ancient cultures, are not yet determined. Their civilization emerged, in much the same way as ancient Egypt. Around 1490 AD the Dogon people migrated to the Bandiagara cliffs of central Mali. There are approximately 700 Dogon villages, with an average of 400 inhabitants. The tribe’s folk call themselves ‘Dogon’ or ‘Dogom’, but in the older literature they are most often called ‘Habe’, a Fulbe meaning ‘stranger’.
