Description
This small zoomorphic figure made of old bronze, black iron reveals some of the most accomplished sculptures made by a Nigerian tribe group called Mumuye. Mumuye figure demonstrates an astonishing range of variations, testifying to their makers’ unbridled creativity and limitless inventiveness. Here, the radically shortened volume of the pelvic area and legs, with a comparatively small head, closely drawn face, high crested coiffure, amplifies the striking dynamics of the torso. The arms are slightly bent and held away from the body similarly to the position of the wooden statues of larger dimensions also sculpted by the Mumuye. The lower body is, however, more work since it consists of two thick legs that contain broad and flattened feet which are carved toes.
Their size varies from 15 cm to 1.50 m, but the average is rather between 70 and 90 cm. The Mumuye bronze statuettes are rare and have points in common with the parts produced by the Chamba, the Wurkun and Jukun, all present in eastern Nigeria. The patina is obtained by a coating of oil or wax on the surface, and the color varies from a very dark to a light brown. Their greyish tone is due to accumulated dust. The statue may have added elements: beads, belts, bracelets, chains, leather laces, ropes of braided vegetable matter, brass wires, or cowrie shells. Even though the Mumuye show great respect for the skulls of the ancestors, their statuary does not depict ancestors but rather incarnates tutelary spirits. These small sculptures reinforce the status and prestige of their owner, as they hold them in their hands, they have a dialogue with them and thus ensures them personal protection.
The Mumuye live in northwestern Nigeria. The Mumuyes are about 400.000. They grow millet, yams, sorghum. They are divided into 3 groups with no difference in dialects but have different customs and beliefs. Possession of statues reinforces the prestige of its owner who has the ability to interact with them by holding them in his hands. The statues are also used to call the rain. In so doing he also provides personal protection and Enclosure family. The larger statues are used for divination, medicine to combat epidemics and ordeals to solve conflict between two persons. Men in conflict embrace statues and may be punished if they lye.
