Ogowe Mask, Tsogo – Gabon
This striking carved mask originate from the Tsogo peoples, Ogowe River region, Gabon, and is part of wider regional tradition of divided color faces. The art of the Ogowe tribes, particularly the Mpongwe, is closely tied to death rituals. Tsogo masks are controlled by the Bwiti men’s initiation society. The masks represent supernatural beings, each type has its own name and symbolism. They are used in initiation ceremonies and share the kaolin white surface with their Gabon neighbors, the Fang, Punu and Kwele.
Made of 100% wood.
