This beautiful hand-carved anthropomorphic figure comes from the Ivory Coast/Mali and is called Tugubele. It has preserved its authenticity, surface, and aged patina. The wood carving is exquisite and exaggerated features, have all of the hallmarks of the Senufo people. This impressive representation depicts a mother nursing an infant. The sculpture is used to honor women and their maternal role in ceremonies and festivals of the tyekpa society, a social association among the Senufo peoples. The delicate infant is lying on his mother's lap, while the mother remains stoic. The head of the mother is rendered in a rather expressionistic fashion, with pronounced mouth, large eyes, and crestlike coiffure. Her slit eyes suggest a sense of introspection and serenity as she fulfills her maternal obligations. The surface of the figure is finished in a lustrous sticky patina, indicating the frequent application of oils as spiritual libations, but also to preserve the piece.

This Guro mask and many of the other masks are representations of the spirit of Gu, the wife of Zamble, a supernatural being. Guro masks originate from the west coast of Africa and more specifically from Ivory Coast. Guro mask is very unique and has a combination of human and animal traits and imaginary beasts. The Guro tribe or Gouro tribe as they are sometimes pronounced are very spiritual people and their masks are all representations of their way of live and spiritual way of life.

This figure with the head of a monkey represent one of the humbler gods of the Baulte tribe. It is called Gbekre or Mbotumbo, a god with several tasks, for he is both judge of hell and helper of those in need, protector of the living against their enemies. Statues of standing monkeys were used in many different Baule cults, the most prominent of which was Mbra and they are very different in style of other Baule sculptures. If the ancestor-cult statues are often characterized by refined and detailed carving, the wood stained and often polished, the gbekre are very different. They are roughly carved in unstained wood. They combine human and animal traits in such a way that it is nearly impossible to separate them. Besides, they are used for many different cults, for a trance divination cult among them. Women are forbidden to see some of them, others are openly shown.

In this type of masks, human features are combined with the powerful bill of the hornbill bird, which is the most distinguishing feature of these masks. The bird is honored by the Jimini, the Ligbi, the Senufo and other peoples. They attach great importance to this bird, considering it one of mythical primeval animals, an attendant on the souls of the dead and a symbol of fertility. They are danced during the funerals of distinguished Muslim holy men, and their performances mark critical moments during the Muslim calendar year, and at the end of Ramadan, the month-long Islamic fast. The masqueraders are greatly admired for the grace of their dance movements, which they perform in pairs and in perfect unison. They are also valued for the positive qualities ascribed to the hornbill, whose behavior and family life are considered exemplary by the Ligbi.
