This beautiful piece is a granary door made by the Dogon people of Mali. It was designed to seal off a ceramic and stone granary, which contained agricultural produce which would have sustained a large social group between harvests. Granaries were therefore of primary importance to the Dogon, as the family would have starved if rats or other animals had been able to enter the granary. It displays well and is a striking and attractive piece of secular African design.

This Dogon Nommo figure has been rendered in a simplified way, reducing it to its essential. It is elongated with emphasis on geometric forms. This is extremely versatile, although common stylistic characteristics – such as a tendency towards stylization – are apparent on the statues. This ‘Gomintogo Mask’ originates from the Dogon people of Eastern Mali, and represent one of the 80 masks types of the tribe. The first mask was said to be originally carved by a farmer who killed the deer because it had devastated his fields. The farmer built an altar to shelter the spirit of the deer and prevent it to wanders and take revenge on the living people.

This figure’s posture of up-stretched arms is a common Dogon motif that is often interpreted as a prayer for rain. Here it seems more likely to represent supplication to the ancestors.

This impressive male fetish figure originates from the Songye, in the southern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This particular piece features an horn one on top of the head, large open mouth with protruding tooth. On the back of the neck, there used to be a small compartment that was used to put to insert fetish material, called boanga. Typically the arms are along the body and hands are placed on each side of the abdomen. The fetish is firmly planted on his legs slightly bent forward and feet are carved on a thick cylindrical base that is eroded in some places. The patina is brown and light brown in places. Songye fetish figures vary in size from 4 to 60. The works of Songye craftsmen are often used within the secret societies during various ceremonies.
