Hogon Ancestral Portrait, Dogon – Mali
This well carved portrait comes from the Dogon tribe of Mali. It seems to represent a sage, the Hogon, a spiritual leader of the village. He is elected from among the oldest men of the families of the village. After his election he must follow six months’ imprisonment, during which he is not allowed to shave or wash himself. He wears white clothes and no one is allowed to touch him. His meals, prepared by impure young girls, are brought to him in special bowls, the ogo banya. He receives these cups from his predecessor or during his induction ceremony.
Made of 100% wood.
