This ‘Gomintogo Mask’ originates from the Dogon people of Eastern Mali, and represent one of the 80 masks types of the tribe. The first mask was said to be originally carved by a farmer who killed the deer because it had devastated his fields. The farmer built an altar to shelter the spirit of the deer and prevent it to wanders and take revenge on the living people.

Although such works have the potential to affect all members of a Senufo community, access to this doll oracle is restricted to the most enlightened senior male and, occasionally, female members, who keep it shrouded in secrecy.

This beautiful Baule Warrior figure depict a Janus human figure, with two-headed shield and spear and visually conveys the ideal of beauty belonging to this ethnic group. They often represents a male spirit who possesses unpredictable persona and power. The purpose of creating these finely carved sculptures is to reduce the danger or the potential harm of the spirit. the piece is enhanced by the shiny patina.

The Baule hold objects in high esteem for the spiritual presence that is related to the object. According to the Baule mythology, the animal of the bush are heavenly spirit of agriculture. These masks are used on the occasion of the new harvest, at the visit of dignitaries, or at the funerals of notables.

This figure with the head of a monkey represent one of the humbler gods of the Baulte tribe. It is called Gbekre or Mbotumbo, a god with several tasks, for he is both judge of hell and helper of those in need, protector of the living against their enemies. Statues of standing monkeys were used in many different Baule cults, the most prominent of which was Mbra and they are very different in style of other Baule sculptures. If the ancestor-cult statues are often characterized by refined and detailed carving, the wood stained and often polished, the gbekre are very different. They are roughly carved in unstained wood. They combine human and animal traits in such a way that it is nearly impossible to separate them. Besides, they are used for many different cults, for a trance divination cult among them. Women are forbidden to see some of them, others are openly shown.

This authentic carved wood mask, depicting an abstracted animal originates from the Dogon tribe in Mali.
