Gomintogo Zoomorphic figure, Dogon-Mali
This mask ith elongated and abstracted mouth from the Chokwe people of Southwestern Congo (DRC), Angola and Zambia. It is called “Chihongo” referring to the male spirit of wealth and power. Worn only by a chief or one of his sons as they traveled through their realm exacting tribute in exchange for the mask’s protection. This mask is unusual among Chokwe masks in that its face is carved out of wood rather than made of constructed materials.The mask emphasize noble status. The protruding chin signifies its elderly rank.
