It was designed to seal off a ceramic and stone granary, which contained agricultural produce which would have sustained a large social group between harvests. This Dogon Nommo figure has been rendered in a simplified way, reducing it to its essential. It is elongated with emphasis on geometric forms. This is extremely versatile, although common stylistic characteristics – such as a tendency towards stylization – are apparent on the statues. The subjective impression is one of immobility with a mysterious sense of a solemn gravity and serene majesty, although conveying at the same time a latent movement. Their art deals with the myths whose complex ensemble regulates the life of the individual. This zoomorphic deer mask is called ‘Gomintogo’. It originates from the Dogon people of Eastern Mali, and represent one of the 80 masks types of the tribe. The first mask was said to be originally carved by a farmer who killed the deer because it had devastated his fields. The farmer built an altar to shelter the spirit of the deer and prevent it to wanders and take revenge on the living people.

This impressive male fetish figure originates from the Songye, in the southern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This particular piece features an horn one on top of the head, large open mouth with protruding tooth. On the back of the neck, there used to be a small compartment that was used to put to insert fetish material, called boanga. Typically the arms are along the body and hands are placed on each side of the abdomen. The fetish is firmly planted on his legs slightly bent forward and feet are carved on a thick cylindrical base that is eroded in some places. The patina is brown and light brown in places. Songye fetish figures vary in size from 4 to 60. The works of Songye craftsmen are often used within the secret societies during various ceremonies.

This type of circular pendant representing a sun refers to an ancient and complex passage of the Dogon cosmogony, at a time when light was given to men through 10 suns. This single male figure with raised arms originates from the Dogon tribe. This posture has usually been interpreted as a gesture of prayer—an effort to link earth and heavens and it has been suggested that it may represent an appeal for rain. This masterpiece of Dogon figurative art depicts a man with a well-modeled body in a naturalistic stance. The artist has carefully rendered the figure's musculature, anatomical detail, and body ornament. His stylized beard identifies him as an elder and an individual whose age and experience entitle him to participate in the most important religious, political, and social affairs of Dogon society.
