They are used in initiation ceremonies and share the kaolin white surface with their Gabon neighbors, the Fang, Punu and Kwele.

This young Fang "Eyema Byeri" figure of a male ancestor is characteristic of the style of the Fang Ntumu subgroup of northern Gabon near the Cameroon border. The appearance of Fang reliquary figures varies greatly from region to region. The Fang characteristics are recognized by the accentuated muscular reliefs of the arms and calves, as well as the curved shoulders and thighs. A good illustration of the “classical” style of the Southern Fang with a concave-convex face.

This reliquary figure is called Ekuk means both “protective forest spirit” and “children of beete.” It displays a flat surface and often has a whitened heart-shaped face, a triangular nose, coffee-bean eyes and small or non-existent mouth. The Kidumu moon shaped masks are worn by members of the Kiduma - a secret society which plans and executes celebrations, feasts and funerals., and belongs to the revival period of the Teke, people of the Democratic Rep. of Congo. Part of a mask costume, these headpieces appeared in masquerades linked with a nature spirit called Nkita. Young male members of an association entered the village from the wilderness and executed vigorous, cartwheeling dances.

Kwele masks with two large horns represent the antelope whose flesh was eaten at the end of the 'beete' ritual. The beete ritual, which lasted for a week, would open with the departure of men into the forest to hunt antelope, whose flesh, seasoned with medicines, had to be eaten at a meal at the closing ceremony. Kwele faces are usually painted in white kaolin earth, a pigment associated by the Kwele with light and clarity, the two essential factors in the fight against evil. The Kwele masks originate from the rain forests of Gabon on the western coast of Africa and are hand carved by the Bwete association.

This Mbete reliquary guardian figure originates from Kota, in the Republic of Congo near the northern frontier of Gabon and also in northern Gabon. A fine and rare figure standing on elongated, wedge-shaped feet, the barrel-shaped torso beneath the elongated neck and stylized head The helmet-like head with abstract mask-like features, straight nose and slit-like eyes ; fine aged patina of kaolin with areas of black pigment at the feet, hands, neck and head.. White pigmented surface with painted black highlights, surface somewhat encrusted. The fully carved figure has a niche carved into the back for magical ingredients. The latter are thought to have a connection with the ancestor`s cult. They are believed to function as guardians of the remains of ancestral bones housed in a separate hut in the village.

This one comes from an area of mixed influences and styles located among the Vuvi and Mitsogho people. But the present mask is more related to the Vuvi than the Mitsogho because of certain features such as the elongated form of the face and details on facial features including the large arched eyebrows going from the root of the nose to the edges. It does not have a flat white surface but has eyes and eyebrows like those of Vuvi. It has a brown band enclosing the lower lip to chin and the cap treated in a manner close Vuvi. Rest of maroon and black patina, nice harmony.
