Yaka Tribe Mukanda Mask – Congo
Carved Initiation Mask With Rat & Raffia Base originating from the Yaka people of of the northern Congo. The overall imagery is intended to instill confidence and a sense of aggressive manhood during the youth initiation. With all this emphasis on manhood, the nature of gender relations in Yaka society is worthy of further study. Personal touches or sentiments are added with chosen animal or sexual sculpture affixed to the top, for a moralizing undertone. The large nose found in Yaka masks and other carved figures is said to point to male fertility, while the shape of the eyes reference the moon and therefore female fertility.
Made of 100% wood, raffia.
