This Ambete (Mbete, Mbede, Mbete and Mbeti) figure originates from Kota, in the Republic of Congo near the northern frontier of Gabon and also in northern Gabon. Hands held in front of stomach, stylized relief facial features with a rectangular mouth, central crested hairdo. White pigmented surface with painted black highlights surfaces somewhat encrusted. Their fully carved figures, such as this excellent example, had a niche carved into the back for magical ingredients. The latter are thought to have a connection with the ancestor`s cult.  They are believed to function as guardians of the remains of ancestral bones housed in a separate hut in the village.

Vuvi mask originate from Gabon near the border with the DRC Democratic Republic of Congo. White face masks are a classic of the peoples of Gabon. This one comes from an area of mixed influences and styles located among the Vuvi and Mitsogho people. But the present mask is more related to the Vuvi than the Mitsogho because of certain features such as the elongated form of the face and details on facial features including the large arched eyebrows going from the root of the nose to the edges. It does not have a flat white surface but has eyes and eyebrows like those of Vuvi. It has a brown band enclosing the lower lip to chin and the cap treated in a manner close Vuvi. Rest of maroon and black patina, nice harmony.

This tribal Mask From the Chokwe is called pwo or mwana pwo mask and  originates from Angola. It has an elaborate hairline made up of a braided fibre fabric, beautiful and unusual scarification patterns on the forehead and cheeks. Pwo signifies womanhood and an elder ancestral female associated with fertility. The cross form on the forehead, known as cingelyengelye, is an early Portuguese influence.

This reliquary figure is called Ekuk means both “protective forest spirit” and “children of beete.” It displays a flat surface and often has a whitened heart-shaped face, a triangular nose, coffee-bean eyes and small or non-existent mouth. The faces is painted in white kaolin earth, a pigment associated by the Kwele with light and clarity, the two essential factors in the fight against evil.

This mini figure is characteristic of the Senufo tribe, in particular, the Meke-Betsi of the North and the North - West Gabon. It is called "Eyema Byeri or "Guardian Byer". Although the couple is an essential dynamic of Senufo thought - the sculpted figure is an emblematic expression of the ideas that govern Senufo society- very few statues of couples have remained together in Western collections, as is the case here.

This type of circular pendant representing a sun refers to an ancient and complex passage of the Dogon cosmogony, at a time when light was given to men through 10 suns. The Kidumu moon shaped masks are worn by members of the Kiduma - a secret society which plans and executes celebrations, feasts and funerals., and belongs to the revival period of the Teke, people of the Democratic Rep. of Congo. Part of a mask costume, these headpieces appeared in masquerades linked with a nature spirit called Nkita. Young male members of an association entered the village from the wilderness and executed vigorous, cartwheeling dances.

A Tsogo mask is a tribal mask native to the Ogooué River basin in Gabon, especially in the south in Ngounié Province. Tsogo masks are controlled by the Bwiti men's initiation society. The masks represent supernatural beings, each type has its own name and symbolism. They are used in initiation ceremonies and share the kaolin white surface with their Gabon neighbors, the Fang, Punu and Kwele.The masks are extremely valuable to collectors of African art.

Kwele masks with two large horns represent the antelope whose flesh was eaten at the end of the 'beete' ritual. The beete ritual, which lasted for a week, would open with the departure of men into the forest to hunt antelope, whose flesh, seasoned with medicines, had to be eaten at a meal at the closing ceremony. Kwele faces are usually painted in white kaolin earth, a pigment associated by the Kwele with light and clarity, the two essential factors in the fight against evil. The Kwele masks originate from the rain forests of Gabon on the western coast of Africa and are hand carved by the Bwete association.
