All along the Niger, this mask type is used for ceremonies associated with fishing and agriculture.
The Markam living in Mali, Guinea and Burkina Faso are neighbors of the Bamana, are a Mande subgroup. This ethnic group is independent of the Bambara but their styles show a strong Bambara influence. The Marka are famous for their masks and puppets. Today they are heavily Islamized, however, they often retain the use of masks and figures for ceremonies and rituals closely related to the Bamana. The mask with an elongated face covered with sheet brass and a crescent hairstyle adorned with brass rings is probably related to the N’Tomo initiation mask for young boys found among the Bamana. Similar to Bambara’s ntomo society masks, Marka masks are also generally carved with horns, comb or crest on top of the head. The Marka dress their masks in gaily-colored costumes made of cloth; they always appear in pairs, to represent man’s courting of a woman. Masks with a comb, similar to the ntomo masks of the Bambara, are danced in the context of adolescent boys’ initiation rites.
