Product Description
Ancestral Dogon Granary Door – Mali
Beautifully designed granary door made by the Dogon people of Mali. It was perfected to seal off a ceramic and stone granary, which contained agricultural produce which would have sustained a large social group between harvests. Granary doors were therefore of primary importance to the Dogon, as the family would have starved if rats or other animals had been able to enter the granary. The storage is therefore considered safe as it is guarded by the ancestors whose images are often depicted on granary doors. Each pieces display a unique design either with impressive carvings of animal, nommos figures or fertility symbols. All doors are striking and attractive pieces of secular African design and each tells a story, with a scenes of life. They come in different sizes from small to large.
Made of 100% wood.
Model is W 35 – H 49 and weight 1.5 kg.
