Description
This hand-carved headrest, with a smooth patina, originates from the Dogon people in Mali. The heavy honey-colored wood has a beautiful grain, the larger handle or extremity is richly patinated from having been carried around by its owner. The flat and slightly curved portion of the headrest also has a warm patina from usage. Dogon headrests are rare, replicating the larger stools in style and form, retaining all of the elegance and the aesthetics of larger pieces.
Headrests like stools are considered to be objects of prestige, denoting social status and hierarchy in African societies but were also carved found in burial caves. The Dogon, who do not now use headrests, attribute them to the Tellem, former inhabitants of the region from the 11th to the 16th centuries. Tellem headrests that have been excavated from documented cave sites have elegant silhouettes but minimal decoration.
The Dogon an ethnic group are mainly located in the administrative districts of Bandiagara and Douentza in Mali, West Africa. The precise origins of the Dogon people, like those of many other ancient cultures, are not yet determined. Their civilization emerged, in much the same way as ancient Egypt. Around 1490 AD the Dogon people migrated to the Bandiagara cliffs of central Mali. There are approximately 700 Dogon villages, with an average of 400 inhabitants. The tribe’s folk call themselves ‘Dogon’ or ‘Dogom’, but in the older literature they are most often called ‘Habe’, a Fulbe meaning ‘stranger’.
