Bambara Dogon Figure with Hidden face – Mali
This Dogon figure called “Dyougou Serou”, comes from the Dogon mythology and represent a male in a kneeling figure with his hands hiding his face. The gesture may evoke many feelings: suffering, longing, fear, reverence or or a sobering state, in a contemplative act of shame. This fully demonstrate the expression and creativity of the Dogon artworks. It is beautifully handcrafted, and usually represent spirits, ancestors or the primordial couple. Figures such as these were placed in shrines and treated with great respect by the Dogon ancestor cult. Through a wide range of style, scale, belief and function the figures depicted share a timeless, serene equality necessary to the continuity of Dogon society.
