A powerful and authentic kran mask made of hard wood, with brown patina and pigments. An unusually old mask of the Dan-Kran, depicting a monkey (chimpanzee or guenon). The mask displays characteristic forms: a short, bulging forehead, deep-set, triangular eyes, protruding, triangular cheeks and a large, open mouth. At the top of the head is a (typical) iron pin. The present Kagle maskâ is an especially old type, as suggested by the rectangular (rather than round) shape of the fastening eyelets for the mask costume along the edge of the mask, as well as by its tongue, which is made of red dyed terracotta. This zoomorphic figure with protruding eyes and a large open mouth and carved teeth is a classic example of the Mambila people of northern Nigeria. They are thought to embody ancestors who are responsible for the clan's wealth.  The wide range of uses to which such a figure may have been employed was probably determined by the medicines in the possession of the owner, and how it was activated, rather than by specific stylistic characteristics of the sculpture itself.

This type of circular pendant representing a sun refers to an ancient and complex passage of the Dogon cosmogony, at a time when light was given to men through 10 suns. This beautiful pwo or mwana pwo mask, with an elaborate hairline made up of a braided fibre fabric, and unusual scarification patterns on the forehead and cheeks originates from the Chokwe people of Angola. Pwo signifies womanhood and an elder ancestral female associated with fertility. The cross form on the forehead, known as cingelyengelye, is an early Portuguese influence.

This authentic carved wood mask, depicting an abstracted animal originates from the Dogon tribe in Mali. The Kanaga masks depict the face as an almost long and rectangular box with deeply hollowed channels for the eyes. According to Dogon beliefs, it represents a wild monkey, uncivilized, dangerous, and antisocial behavior –  the direct opposite of their beliefs about the way a proper, solid, upstanding Dogon person is expected to behave.
