This zoomorphic Dyodyomini Dogon mask made of Hardwood with a kaolin coating is an exceptional piece for your collection. It originates from Mali, located in the administrative districts of Bandiagara and Douentza, Mopti region. The term Dyodyomini which designates this type of mask evokes a bird that pecks. It would be a Dobu, a sort of hornbill, white and brown, with a long curved beak. It was created on the occasion of a Dama (funeral ceremony, the feast of mourning).

This one comes from an area of mixed influences and styles located among the Vuvi and Mitsogho people. But the present mask is more related to the Vuvi than the Mitsogho because of certain features such as the elongated form of the face and details on facial features including the large arched eyebrows going from the root of the nose to the edges. It does not have a flat white surface but has eyes and eyebrows like those of Vuvi. It has a brown band enclosing the lower lip to chin and the cap treated in a manner close Vuvi. Rest of maroon and black patina, nice harmony.

The Kidumu moon shaped masks are worn by members of the Kiduma - a secret society which plans and executes celebrations, feasts and funerals., and belongs to the revival period of the Teke, people of the Democratic Rep. of Congo. The art of the Ogowe tribes, particularly the Mpongwe, is closely tied to death rituals. Tsogo masks are controlled by the Bwiti men's initiation society. The masks represent supernatural beings, each type has its own name and symbolism. They are used in initiation ceremonies and share the kaolin white surface with their Gabon neighbors, the Fang, Punu and Kwele.

"Elu" mask with an expressive Bird like face and hinged jaw originates from the Ogoni tribe in Nigeria, early 20th century. Wooden face mask with hinged, movable jaw. Lower jaw portion attached to upper by narrow wooden threads on each side. Semicircular disc like ears protrude from sides of face. Scarification marks with geometrically incised designs appear on both sides of the face at outer corner of eye area. The eyes are hollow almond shaped openings. The head decoration has a raised portion, with a vertical light-painted keloid or scar mark the center.

This Ambete (Mbete, Mbede, Mbete and Mbeti) figure originates from Kota, in the Republic of Congo near the northern frontier of Gabon and also in northern Gabon. Hands held in front of stomach, stylized relief facial features with a rectangular mouth, central crested hairdo. White pigmented surface with painted black highlights surfaces somewhat encrusted. Their fully carved figures, such as this excellent example, had a niche carved into the back for magical ingredients. The latter are thought to have a connection with the ancestor`s cult.  They are believed to function as guardians of the remains of ancestral bones housed in a separate hut in the village.

This reliquary figure is called Ekuk means both “protective forest spirit” and “children of beete.” It displays a flat surface and often has a whitened heart-shaped face, a triangular nose, coffee-bean eyes and small or non-existent mouth.
